Dr Luvai completed specialty training in the Yorkshire Deanery for dual accreditation in Metabolic Medicine and Chemical Pathology and was subsequently appointed as a Consultant in 2014. He is currently a Consultant and Medical Examiner at The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NuTH) based at the Freeman Hospital. He is the Lead Consultant for the Tertiary Lipid and Metabolic Service at the Royal Victoria Infirmary and a member of the regional Lipid Specialists Advisory Group. He provides medical oversight to the Cardiovascular Biomarkers Laboratory which is a centre of excellence for CVD Biomarkers with vast expertise and experience in specialised measurements including Lp(a), apolipoproteins, sterols, ultracentrifugation and lipoprotein electrophoresis. The service provides care for a large number of patients with conditions associated with increased cardio-metabolic risk. He is a principal investigator on several lipid, obesity and cardiovascular outcome clinical trials and co-investigator in others. He has been Steering Committee Member for the EVOLVE Lp(a) Study.
Dr Luvai is the Director of the specialty Metabolic Medicine and Chemical Pathology training programme in NHS England Education North East (Formerly Health Education England North East). He teaches on several undergraduate and postgraduate courses within Newcastle University Medical School. He also teaches on other cardio-metabolic and laboratory medicine courses.
Dr Luvai provides expert support for the diagnosis and management of biochemical and metabolic clinical problems, advises on appropriate individual patient investigations and on the repertoire provided by the Clinical Biochemistry and Genomic Laboratories. He has a laboratory interest in personalised & precision medicine, reference intervals, performance of clinical decision limits and the impact of biological variation on disease monitoring.
